I'm a PC...

...and my ads aren’t very good.

It’s a pretty cheap-shot these days to attack your competitor in your advertising; something the supermarkets do well, and that’s where it should end.

Microsoft’s I’m a PC commercials would like you to think it’s a counter-attack to Apple’s excellent adverts highlighting the differences of Operating System through human characters.

Unfortunately this counter-attack doesn’t hold up. With some humour (and with an Apple-shaped glint in my eye) it actually reinforces Apples message. Little clips of a plethora of cultures from around the globe all stating they’re a PC merely emphasises ‘PC’ as a generic and not as a brand. Which in-turn ultimately says ‘we’re not a brand’, unlike er, Apple.

I’m proud to say ‘I’m not a PC!’

Come on Microsoft, you can do better.

He's back!

So there I am watching tv on Friday night and the adverts come on and it’s the Cadbury’s gorilla! We turn up the tv and watch him play drums to ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. Not the best song ever and not nearly as strong as our Phil Collins but still great to see.

THEN we were doubly excited to see our old friends the toy cars and trucks (or not toy cars and trucks, whatever, who cares) driving away to Bon Jovi’s classic Living on a Prayer. Straight after the gorilla!

Ok so the songs aren’t as good as last time but you know what, I’m not sure that matters. What does matter is we were pleased to see them and talked about it aftwerwards. What’s more, I’m looking forward to the next ones. Job done.

Here’s a link to the Gorilla.

Is it fair for advertising to mess with your head?

This ad was created in Mumbai to deter drink driving. I reckon if I was driving down the road and saw this I’d think I was going completely insane.

It is cunning though and was created by Ogilvy India, who are setting the pace of design in a fast emerging market.

First ever live advert

This is the first ever live advert as shown on Channel 4 last night at 8.10pm. Usually we talk about whether this kind of brand awareness advertising works, but when an ad is this cool I don’t really think it matters!

Very excited about this, can’t wait for more.

Check out the Honda website to see the ad as well.

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Feet

Guy Ritchie has directed the new Nike Football advert.

I think it’s great. What do you think?

New Audi RS6 advert

Powerful Hungarian gymnasts, filmed in Budapest by Los Angeles-based director Paul Hunter and part of a £4m campaign for the RS6.

This ad is stunning, and dramatises the strength and fluidity of movement of the car’s internal workings, but would it make me buy an Audi? Well – it won’t stop me that’s for sure!

The ultimate foam party

Footage from Sony’s new advert. Crazy stuff. They gave cameras to people to film the making of the advert. This footage appeared on Youtube months ago. Love it!

Captivating Car Commercials

I don’t really pay that much attention to the adverts on tv (except for the automatic dissection of them previously discussed in this blog), but recently a couple have totally captivated me whilst I’m doing something else, waiting for the ad break to end…

What is it with car adverts? Why are they so cool? (Aside from the obvious answers like “they have really big budgets and forward thinking marketing managers”)

Like this one from Honda

And this one from Ford

New Guinness Advert

Airs tonight on ITV1 at 8.30pm

Directed by Nicolai Fuglsig, the guy behind the Sony Bravia ‘Balls’ advert, this one looks like a belter.

Edit: The Morning After
Hmmm, it was okay. Technically fantastic but are these ‘super-ads’ getting a bit same-y?

An oldie but a goodie

When talking about great ads, Guiness has to feature somewhere.
