Leeds Armed Forces Day 27 June 2010

In conjunction with our clients The Second World War Experience Centre and Leeds City Council we were proud to design and produce the posters, flyers and programmes for Leeds Armed Forces Day.

Our very own Richard took some of the photography for the literature as well as on the day. The event was a great success with plenty to do and see for all the family. Most of the team from ICM also attended and it was an eye-opening experience. From the Veterans, Service Personnel and Cadets Parade in the morning to the Beat the Retreat Ceremony in the afternoon, from the tanks and big guns to the wonderful live entertainment it really was a special day and one to make Leeds prou…

Fresh air, culture and good food

I popped along to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at the weekend and must say it’s well worth a visit.

Set in 500 acres of parkland it’s a great place to grab some fresh air and exercise while being inspired by some amazing art.

We meandered around the parkland (dodging the sheep) and happened upon sculptures by Yorkshire’s very own Henry Moore

and Italy’s Mimmo Paladino

not forgetting to leave time for quiet contemplation in James Turrell’s Deer Shelter Skyspace.

Turrell’s work uses light and space to create art installations which extend and enhance perception. The Deer Shelter Skyspace is an external piece which consists of a large square chamber with an aperture cut into the roof (an old deer shelter). Through this aperture the visitor is offered a heightened vision of the sky, which is oddly calming (though less so if you take a hungry infant).

Early birds can experience Turrell’s work at it’s best by crawling out of bed as the first dawn light illuminates the chamber (followed by breakfast and fresh coffee in the YSP restaurant).

YSP also hosts lots of events from dry stone walling and various sculpture courses with the artists (including a Fairy Making Workshop!) to family events like the recent ‘Tracks and Traces’ where children take turns to lay and follow magical trails through different habitats in the YSP landscape.

For the cost conscious entry to the park is free, all they ask is £4 for the carpark.

All in all a great day, best enjoyed in sunshine but wouldn’t be too spoilt by the rain – just pack a waterproof and wellies or simply enjoy the indoor exhibitions and a long lunch in the restaurant instead…

Don't Panic!

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a big reader. I’ll read a magazine or a newspaper from cover to cover, but give me a book and I just can’t stick with it.

Few authors have made me pick up their book with enthusiasm to keep turning the pages, let alone get to the end and go back to the beginning to read it again. One of those authors is Douglas Adams.

Maybe it is because I had watched the BBC Television series of ‘Hitchhikers’ before reading the book that gave me the interest, maybe it was the enticing book cover?

Maybe it was knowing the idea for the title The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy occurred to him while he lay drunk in a field, that raised my interest in reading his words.

Towel Day has become an annual celebration on the 25th of May, as a tribute to the late author, on that day, fans around the universe proudly carry a towel in his honour.

Here’s a little clip of Towel Day:
