Branding in the frame

We were recently asked to create a brand for a local photographer who was about to take the plunge and work for himself. After some initial brainstorming and name suggestions we all came to the conclusion that Kaptur was the name that resonated the best with the client’s services of both static image photography and moving image.

As part of the concept development we looked at the typography and graphic styles of many great camera brands such as Hasselblad, Leica, Nikon and so on…

From those we created the basics of the Kaptur brand:

For me the happiest moment was creating the shutter icon from the letter K – I always smile when seeing something like this.

We created sub-brands for the differing services shown by icons for film, photography, as well as a pencil for the blog.

Our portfolio on iPad

Here at ICM we love nothing more than embracing new technologies. Recently we’ve been looking at our own portfolio and methods for presentation. After bouncing a few ideas around we came to the conclusion that Apple’s iPad would be a fantastic, interactive way to showcase our best work.

Having spent the last week or so setting up the iPad it really is simplicity in action; intuitive to use and easy to update. I’ve branded the iPad to give it a tailored, professional look. I’ve cleaned up the desktop of any unnecessary apps (your potential client doesn’t need to see AngryBirds just yet!) and most importantly, I’ve gone through using an iPad with the ICM team members that will be using it the most to make sure they are comfortable presenting with it.

So what are the good points?

Portability – No more lugging around an A2 portfolio, bending corners, tearing plastic sleeves etc.

Flexibility – the presentation is no longer a linear ‘front-to-back’ affair. Presentations can be tailored in an instant to the next meeting or client.

Fun factor – putting the portfolio directly in the hands of the viewer gives them control.

Its organic – just done another great design job? Add it to the portfolio in an instant – this can be done without the iPad even being in the building (this is an ICM first and it is very clever). Imagine you are about to go into a presentation and you needed that latest piece of great work adding – simple phone back to the office and have it added remotely – in an instant!

Any bad points?

Fingerprints – I’m constantly cleaning the screen of fingerprints!

The scroll-factor – Not everyone is familiar with Apple’s scrolling method, this can lead to leaning across the desk to get the viewer back to where they need to be. This can soon turn into the fun-factor as mentioned above.

Size – at a shade under the size of a piece of A4 paper, we have found ourselves being more creative with the way we show our work.

So if you want to see the ICM iPad Portfolio in action just give Louise or Caroline a call to arrange an appointment and get your fingers at the rea…
