Sally’s Perfect Pancake Recipe

With Pancake Day approaching next Tuesday (24th February) we should all be buying our pancake ingredients, unless they are not already in our cupboards! One of the most important decisions that we then have to make is….. What do we put with our pancakes?

Some people may choose to go down the savoury route with their pancakes which, personally is not for me. Others may decide to keep it simple with lemon and sugar. For me, I like to mix it up with my pancakes. It’s all about variety – I will have one with golden syrup, one kept simple with lemon and sugar, one with Nutella spread all over and filled with strawberries or maybe bananas (need to get my five a day in somewhere!) then if I can manage anymore my favourite out of those would have to be pancakes with golden syrup.

To make the perfect pancakes you will need:
125g of plain flour
1 egg
300ml (half a pint) of milk
Oil for frying
Finally, what ever toppings are your favourites.

For all you cheats out there you can buy pre made batter mix or even pancake mix in a bottle to which you just add water.

Please get involved and tell me what your favourite toppings/ fillings are with your pancakes and how you make them.

I always have my pancakes with sugar and vinegar. Don't knock it until you have tried it. It's as family thing I think

Any tips for wrist-flicking perfection Sally? :-)

What flavour vinegar Melissa?

I got hooked on crepes at Glasto last year - there are so many things you can put in them! Have to go with sugar and lemon in the ultimate top spot for Shrove Tuesday though.

That was no Crepe . . that was a wetwipe . . .

pretty sure it was a crepe - although it was about 4 in the morning, as I was leaving site to be able to get back to my desk for Monday afternoon. That was a painful day.

the only tips I can give you for wrist-flickling is practice makes perfect!

Hi Siân.

Has to be normal Malt Vinegar. The same stuff one would put on fish and chips.

It was a dried crepe then . . . or a soggy Dorito . . .

And will Sally be running a helpdesk, demonstration day or some kind of 0898 phone number for those with wrists like southern beer?

You can't just go putting on helpful bits of advice on the internet and not follow it through . . .

. . . I meant 0800 number . . . obviously . . .

Honest . . .

I'm afraid no helpline or anything has been arranged. All I can say is go and practice your pancake skills at home!

As always . . .

Any tips on eating discarded circular bits of cardboard at popular musical festivals Sian?

Malt!? I think I might go a bit "green eggs and ham" on that one. Though I can see balsamic and salt might be good. Mmmm.... getting hungry again now...

top tip - don't.
If you really have to eat, go and hunt down a bacon sarnie.

I hope everyone enjoyed their pancakes yesterday! I certainly did but I had to cheat and use a pancake mix in a bottle. To my surprise they still tasted good and I went for the golden syrup topping in the end!
