The Right Form-ewe-la for a Viral Campaign?

We’re doing our first ever poll today! It’s not a real poll, more a desperate plea from me to prove that I’m right and Richard isn’t quite so…

A friend of mine – @drgs100 – tweeted about this yesterday, and it made me laugh so much last night that I knew I wanted to share it with everyone to cheer up Monday morning.

Richard’s first response, “No way! But it’s so obviously fake!” Not in a mean way, just dismay at the fakeness and loss of a real opportunity to do something brilliant.

Now, yes it is, clearly, but I don’t think that matters all that much – it’s still really funny, so the question du jour: Does a viral have to be real, or does it just need to be funny/cool/interesting?

I don’t know how to make a real poll so you’ll just have to put your vote in the comments…

(To give this a touch more context (if you want it) we also loved the recent Vodafone viral- which whilst also clearly fake, is alledgedly perfectly possible with new advances in telemetry)

Real - If you've ever seen sheep dog trials on the telly then you know these guys have skills. I think they have speeded it up and maybe trimmed some of the edges with photoshop but I believe its real. Although that might be because I really want it to be real.

Some of it's real and some isn't...

I can't wait for One Man and His Dog to introduce a special night-time class - I'd watch that!

I want it to be real, but fear that parts of it may be computer influenced!

Maybe they're just trying to pull the wool over your eyes!

Reality seems to be a big issue with viral marketing. When the line between reality and what you have just viewed is blurred, such as Cadbury's Eyebrow dancing and drumming gorilla, the first thing you want to do is tell someone what you just witnessed. A fantastic way of spreading the viral like a... er... virus!

If you see something that makes you stop in your tracks and pass it on, then it's worked - I don't think the level of realism has a great deal to do with it. I think it has a great deal more to do with personal tastes, and the tastes of the people with whom you're likely to share it. A sorts of self-selecting cold if you will...
