Can an advert make a song popular?

Recently the Noisettes ‘Don’t Upset the Rhythm’ made it to number 2 in the UK charts. This is the band performing the song in Radio One’s Live Lounge.

The song was featured in the Mazda 2 advert which makes me wonder, if this song had not been featured in this advert, would it have still become the hit that it did? Here is the advert.

It was only the chorus that featured in the advert, the most catchiest part of the song which would be why when people then heard the song on the radio or saw the music video they would instantly know that they have heard this somewhere before.

Personally I had not heard of the Noisettes before they had realised this song. Therefore the power of using songs in advertising can launch a band mainstream or if they are already known can increase the sales of the songs or albums. But has the advert increased Mazda’s sales?

And would people have taken to Heartbeat by José González had it not been featured in Sony's Bravia advert?

I often wonder what it means to an artist/band when an ad agency comes along asking to use their work?!

I think the artist/band must be pleased to have their music featured, especially if the ad is for a big brand. It is good exposure for the artist/band. They would have also seen the success that other acts have had with their songs being featured in ads.
