Race for Life 2011
On Saturday June 25 at Temple Newsam, Leeds, Maria, Maria’s mum Pat and I took part in the 5K Race for Life for Cancer Research.
It was a fantastic day with a wonderful atmosphere. On the back of each person’s t-shirt was a sign for you to write your reason for taking part in the race. Sometimes the messages were positive, sometimes heartbreaking stories of friends and family members that had been lost, but the atmosphere of the day was uplifting with everyone determined to help Cancer Research by raising lots of money for their important work to continue and help save lives.

Temple Newsam grounds before the race.
There were people taking part of all ages and abilities so we were split into three sections; runners first, then the joggers and last of all the walkers (that’s us!).

Some of the beautiful views we saw during the race which we completed in 1 hour 10 mins.
Us after the race showing off our medals.
Between us we raised £305 for Cancer Research which could go towards lots of different things:
£123 could fund one of their cancer information nurses for a day
£94 could fund one woman taking part in a trial aiming to improve survival rates for women with breast cancer
£54 could buy 22 thermometers for experiments performed at precise temperatures
If all the women at just one Race for Life event raised £25, that could fund a lab project into a children’s cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma for four years.
We have already planned to do it again next year and our aim is to step it up and become one of the joggers as well as raising even more money for Cancer Research.
